The 5am Club Book Review

This morning I naturally rose at 6am. Sometimes I wake at 5am and have the energy surge to get out of bed and start my day.

I was never this person until I read The 5am Club by Robin Sharma.

I’ve always woken up as late as possible to get away with throwing on clothes, make-up, grabbing something to eat and rushing out the door.

Honestly, this has been a life-long thing. Even eating toast in the car on the way to school, so that I got an extra 10 minutes in bed. And I always won the ‘late for school’ race on sports day.

But something changed when I listened to the Audible version of The 5am Club.

It’s like a lightbulb went on in my brain.

I now really relish time to think, to journal, to listen to the birds, to sit with my 2 beagles and to watch the sunrise before anyone else wakes up.

I do think to myself, who even is this new version of me?

I thought it might be just a phase. We read books, they have an influence on us and we make changes, then we revert to type. But it’s been about 6-8 weeks since I listened to the Audio, mainly in the car on the way to meetings, and things are still going well.

So, let me tell you about the book.

Firstly, the main thing I want to say is blimey, it’s really long – I think it was about 12 hours of Audio in the end. Compared to the one I’m listening to now, Alex Hormozi’s $100M Offers which is 3-4 hours.

And throughout the book, I was thinking ‘just get on with it’ as I’m terribly impatient. I just wanted to have a top-line list of things I need to do to wake at 5am, why I should do it, and what the benefits will be.

The book takes us on a journey of make-believe, where a man, initially a beggar, turns into a billionaire with not long to live. He takes 2 people under his wing; a female entrepreneur and a male artist, who fall in love in the story. The billionaire flies them all over the world, teaching them lots of lessons about life and business and why it’s important to rise at 5am.

In general, the tips I needed to hear were:

  • At 5am, it’s so peaceful and quiet, and you get an extra hour start on the world, so use it to your advantage.
  • Use the 20/20/20 rule to divide up the hour from 5-6am into 3 x 20 minute chunks:
  • Intense physical exercise to jumpstart the brain and body
  • Reflection activities, such as journaling, meditation, to nurture inner peace and clarity
  • Reading, learning and reviewing goals to develop as a person each day.
  • Don’t turn on the mobile phone or laptop – as tempting as that is, it’s best to really have some digital-free time to ourselves.

The book is peppered with inspirational and motivational quotes, and is pretty lighthearted, but I did roll my eyes about 10 times, with some of the storyline and the characters' lines.

There’s an element of repetition too, which feels a waste of time when listening, but on reflection, it’s helping all the information to sink in on a deeper level and make it all stick in the brain better, to have a stronger outcome.

I’m glad I spent those 12 hours listening, and perhaps you’re ready to give it a go too? But if not, you can check out these bullet points above and start putting it into action, from 5am tomorrow!
